Der Weg Einer Freiheit – Agonie [EP]

Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Agonie Cover

Agonie

That bands, especially black metal ones, polarise isn’t something new, but when this polarisation isn’t based on their music but rather on their appearance might be new. The exclamations were huge as three short haired guys with “-core-background” started to play black metal. Der Weg Einer Freiheit will show another time that this outrage was causelessly with their new EP Agonie

While the debut of the three guys, which was released in 2009, caused indignation, the release of their new EP seems to have gone by without anyone noticing. This might be, because the “blasphemy” of short haired guys which usually played -core isn’t provoking enough anymore. On the other hand this alleged hearably “core-influences” aren’t hearably anymore, or never were there in the first place. But what is for sure, this EP should have aroused attention as it is of such a high quality.

You could feel a slight disillusionment, since the EP only features 25 minutes of playing time (although we are happy with 25 minutes of high quality songs). The intro of the record and therefore the first song Der Stille Fluss is held in calm, acoustic sounds. This melody isn’t completely unheard but good and it spreads a melancholic atmosphere. After this intro they start playing fast, cold and still melancholic riffs and quite understandable vocals. The understandable vocals are very suitable for the record, as the sympathetic listener can follow the brilliant lyrics. There is another calm interlude in the middle of the song, but the song ends quite harsh again.

After you enjoyed the first song, you will realise, that the “inherited waste” that could be heard on the debut, were pure imagination or successfully disposed. What remains is the high skill while playing their instruments and singing those lyrics, which creates a consistent black metal atmosphere. As if this wasn’t enough, there is so much variation in this 25 minutes, that other “true” black metal bands could be jealous as hell.

The last two songs of the EP are following the same scheme as the first two, and are therefore offering solid black metal which can’t be critised. The production is as good as the skill while playing their instruments and it leaves enough room for every instrument to unfold itself. The special highlight is the bass which is quite audible and therefore is defining the record furthermore.

Conclusion:

Der Weg Einer Freiheit released a good and stylistic consistent successor of their debut. There is no real highlight on the record, but all songs are above the average and therefore convincing. In terms of orchestration and composition they offer enough varation, although they are using the blast beats a bit inflationary. They are surpassing every band that is playing a similiar style of black metal without copying anyone. I’m really looking forward to the next record of these guys.
