The band Dämmerfarben should be a household name for the most of the visitors, as they took part in the brilliant compilation Der Wanderer Über dem Nebelmeer. By this time, they released their debut record and the hopes for a great record are pumped up as the song on the compilations really was great. But will the record be as harmonious as the cover seems to indicate?
Everybody who starts dreaming as soon as the cover meets their eyes should skip reading this review and buy the record immediately, as you will not make a mistake. The focus clearly lies on a dreamy atmosphere, which clearly is the strength of the record.
This atmosphere is gained through a good mix of black metal and neofolk passages, both with their special allure and sometimes their special weaknesses. Sometimes samples of natural sounds, like birds singing, are used to amplify the atmosphere that is created. The acoustic passages glare through depth which, among other things, can be traced back to the usage of violins.
The composition of the record is flamboyant and offers a broad spectrum of different tempos, orchestration and a unique arc of suspense for every song. Although the composition is really good, the execution of it lacks a bit professionality from time to time. The rhythm instruments are lacking pressure in the black metal passages and the guitars are a bit squashy from time to time, too. This is balanced by the fact, that the vocals of Nostarion are almost perfect and the usage of effects like delay or loop are brilliant as well.
The symbiosis of calmer passages and pure black metal fury is really well done and neither the connection nor the transition between passages seem to be insinscere or artificial. It is hard to say which of the sides has the upper hand as they made a good balance. The orchestration itself is done really good as well (except the named flaws of course) and the acoustic passages glare through excellent guitar play.
Conclusion:
The interplay of cover and band name indicated (especially because I knew the song of the compilation) a really harmonious record and it delivered what it promised. The acoustic passages seduce you to dream, while the black metal fury spices the record up. The major flaw is, that you can hardly hear the bass and drums (at least the bassdrum) from time to time, but nevertheless, I have to state that this is really a good record and I am curious what comes next from this “young” project!
